Invited Speaker: John A. Martini, Historical Consultant

For its annual dinner, the AANS History Section is pleased to have as its featured speaker, John A. Martini, a historical consultant and established author, who will share his knowledge of Alcatraz Island: 200 Years on the Rock. A highly experienced historian, Martini works with clients on historical preservation, education, interpretation and research projects. He also serves as a historian/researcher for museums, park areas and historical displays at sites ranging from Alcatraz Island in Golden Gate National Recreation Area to Sikes Adobe Farmhouse in San Diego County.

Martini will present an illustrated history of Alcatraz from Spanish “discovery” through its establishment as a National Park, including the 1934-1963 era when “the Rock” was an infamous federal penitentiary. His presentation also will discuss the nearly unknown early history of Alcatraz when it served as a harbor defense fort during the Civil War and a dreaded military prison for U.S. Army convicts. Highlights will include rare historic photographs of the fort and prisons on Alcatraz, its notorious residents and views showing the rumored (and real) underground dungeons and tunnels beneath the prison buildings.

Enjoy cocktails and dinner with your colleagues, followed by an engrossing lecture. Registration opens on Nov. 1, 2013, and the cost of the evening is $150 per person.
